With a price tag of under $60 the SYMA X5C-1 Explorer drone is the best cheap drone on the market.
Despite the low price of the Explorers, it comes with a 2MP high degree camera. If you have any interest at all in flying a camera drone then you want to consider trying the X5C-1. This drone is simple enough for beginners to fly and comes equipped with bright LED lights so you’ll be able to spot this drone in cloudy weather and fly it at night. It’s simple to put together and maintain thanks to a modular design. One of the best things about the drone is that it comes packed full of extra goodies. It is small and light and completely safe to fly indoors and outdoors. It’s a solid choice for young beginner pilots but we’re sure anyone will get a kick out of it. We’re going from one affordable new drone to another, as the Altair AA108 is a more recent release than the aforementioned MJX Bugs. Given the solid impression that the Altair left on our staff, we feel that it definitely belongs on our list of the best cheap camera drones. With its gorgeous design, its impressive stability in flight, and incredible specifications, we know that most of you will agree there’s not a lot separating the Bugs and the Altair.
I’d like to start out by drawing attention to the impressive HD camera built in to the Altair. It might not be on the same level as the FHD camera of the Bugs, but it shouldn’t be underestimated. The camera is able to produce good quality aerial footage whenever and wherever necessary. Next, the design. You’ll notice that the small 2-bladed propellers are protected by some thick prop guards. They do good work, but they won’t be able to prevent the motor from breaking if you keep the throttle down after the drone lands in grass. Keep this in mind if you want to prolong the life of your motors.
As far as features go, the Altair has headless mode and three speed settings for beginner, intermediate, and advanced users. But wait, there’s more! The Altair AA108 also has an altitude hold feature that keeps it hovering at a set height for a short burst of time to let you take the ideal aerial shot. The specifications of the drone can’t be sniffed at either. Some people may be disappointed by the range though, as it’s only good for 100 meters. The Best Cheap Drones Without a Camera
Blade Nano QX
The Blade Nano may be the very best cheap drone for beginners looking to enter micro racing thanks to the proprietary SAFE technology. The lightweight frame, Ready-to-Fly (RTF) package, and decent punch, there aren’t many better quads than this out there. Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves though. It’s always good to take a proper look at a drone before making any decisions.
The first thing to note is that the Blade Nano doesn’t come with an FPV camera. Even so, it’s still a lot of fun to fly the drone thanks to its incredible maneuverability for a drone this size. It works great both indoors and outdoors, unless the weather gets windy and it can’t keep up. Next, let’s look at design. The Blade Nano has an aggressive canopy and optional prop guards that keep the two propellers safe from damage. The operating range is up to 70 meters and it clocks in a flight time of around 7 minutes.
If you get sick and tired of LoS flying though, you can also attach an Eachine TX01 to the drone and add extra power with higher rating C batteries. This makes the drone even more fun to fly and opens the door to FPV if you want to have it.
All in all, the Ready to Fly Blade Nano package offers a great flying experience for both beginner and expert pilots. Beginners will get to enjoy a cheap and stable practice drone, and experts can enjoy a drone with plenty of upgrade potential.
Holy Stone HS170 Predator
This is a great option for affordable but powerful drones. Many people have taken to calling it the best budget drone available for the price. It’s a lot of fun to fly around at top speed, which is surprisingly high for a drone like this.
The remote control for the HS170 Predator uses the standard Xbox-style format, and the drone has a flight time of up to eight minutes. You can fly several of these around each other at the same time thanks to the great anti-interference system and it takes a total of 6 AA batteries to fly. One word of caution is that there were a few reviews that mentioned the drone randomly stopped working. It’s hard to tell if this is something that will become a major issue or not when it happens with electronics.
Holy Stone HS150 Bolt Bee
The Holy Stone HS150 drone pulls in some impressive speeds for its size. It’s able to reach up to 30mph and has impressive maneuverability, making it a blast to fly. The drone has an operating range of up to 70 meters, which is double that of some of the other drones we’ve featured. Though it has a fairly standard flight time of up to 7 minutes, it does come with two spare batteries for an extra 14 minutes of flight time. That means that you also have around twice as much flight time as other drones in this price range. This is almost certainly a drone made for racing. It’s arguably among the top quads for racing in our list.
One of the saddest things about this drone is that, despite the great looking headlights, it doesn’t come with a camera built in. That means that it is good as a recreational or racing drone, but it’s not for you if you want to take pictures and videos with your drone.
The ScharkSpark beginner drone is one of the best camera drones available for beginners. It’s built with everything that a beginner pilot would need. It has all of the features that enable novice pilots to relax and enjoy the fun of flying. The robust and rugged construction of the drone, which is made from sturdy materials, ensures that this drone can take a few knocks and bumps. These little accidents are inevitable when beginners are at the helm.
As mentioned, this drone works as a camera drone. That means that you are able to take photos and videos using the drone. It’s a great feature to have for sure. Many beginner drones are not built with cameras attached.
The Best Cheap Racing Drones
EMAX HAWK 5
Emax drones have been around for as long as drone racing has been popular, and they consistently release high quality products loved by the entire racing community. Given that Emax makes all of their parts in house (rather than buying them in like other RTF builders), users can expect to get incredible quality for the price. Adding up the costs of the individual parts will give you a price of up to 20% higher than the price of the fully assembled and ready to fly version. That means that you get a drone built and tested for you for cheaper than it would cost to buy your own drone, with absolutely no risk of damaging the components when building and no time at all is wasted. The Hawk 5 is the hottest release of 2018 as it delivers on every front a far as specs, durable, and price are concerned.
The built-in Emax LS2206 2300kv motors mean that this could be the fastest FPV racing drones available for under $250.
The Omnibus F4 flight controller allows the Hawk 5 to be configured with several different flight modes. Beginners can enjoy the Angle mode, while more experienced pilots can unleash the full potential of Acron mode.

The Rise Vusion 250 Extreme comes with a polished look that is sure to please anyone who wants something a little different than the generic carbon filter Crone. The beautiful design is complemented with a black and yellow color schme that makes the drone sure to catch the eye of onlookers.
It has a segmented modular design and a durable injection-molded airframe that is sure to withstand a few knocks. The team behind the Vusion understand everybody, no matter their skill level, will inevitably crash their drone. There’s no need to worry if you have an accident though, as the Rise Vusion 250 is sure to handle it without any issue.
The drone ships fully assembled and has everything you could need to start flying and racing. The box contains the drone itself (fully assembled), a 6-channel 2.4GHz radio, an 8GHz video transmitter, the FPV goggles, a 600 TVL FPV camera, an LCD video monitor, and a LiPo battery charger along with AA batteries.

It’s definitely good for the racing crowd of course, but it’s also great for people that want a drone they can fly inside to have fun and practice flying.

Brushless Cheap Drones vs Brushed Cheap Drones
No doubt you’ve come across comparisons between brushed and brushless drones. Those comparisons might be on point, but so few of them actually look at the basics of the differences between the two. Many beginner pilots don’t even know what parts of a drone can be brushed or brushless. Just so we’re clear, we’re talking about motors.
A brushed motor uses a rotating set of coils called an armature. The armature works like an electromagnet. These motors are cheap to manufacture and as such they are found at a variety of online marketplaces like Amazon. One drawback of brushed motors is that they aren’t as durable as their brushless cousins, and they can die when you put torque on them when they get stuck.
A brushless motor uses a permanently magnetic external rotor along with 3 phases of coils. Brushless motors last much longer than brushed motors as there are no brushes that get worn down and die. You may need to lubricate the bearings of a brushless motor, but that’s pretty much the only maintenance task to worry about.
Brushless motors are clearly the best choice in the long run. Not only does a brushless motor have a longer lifespan, but they also have a better ratio of power output to weight, which is vital for miniature FPV drones. Since we’ve brought up the topic of FPV, let’s take a closer look at that now.
What is FPV?
FPV is something of a broad term. It stands for first-person-view and, in regards to drones, represents a feature that can be found with other remote control devices. This feature provides users with a livestream of video directly from the drone camera. However, there are two different varieties of FPV on the market to consider. No need to worry though, as we’ll explain both of them so you understand the difference!
WiFi FPV is a common featured found in many drones. From cheap drones made for taking selfies to sophisticated aerial photography drones – WiFi FPV can be found everywhere. However, in regards to the kind of cheap $50 toy drones for taking selfies, a major problem with WiFi FPV is the range (up to 100 meters is about as good as it gets) and high latency. It means that just about all high-speed FPV maneuvering is impossible.
This is where 5.8G FPV comes into play. 5.8G connections are far more reliable and they work on a broader range than WiFi FPV. This kind of FPV technology is more expensive to manufacture, but the costs are worth it; if not just for the extra range, then also for the complete lack of input lag. This is something that really matters for racing drones. In fact, any and all FPV racing is done using 5.8G FPV as WiFi isn’t capable of being used for racing.
Acrobatic vs Stabilized Flying
Drones come with one of two main flying modes – acrobatic flying and stabilized flying. Stabilized flying is found with just about every drone that is used for aerial photography or any other kind of industrial or commercial use. Acrobatic flying, on the other hand – which we’ll call acro from now on – is for racing drones, which are slowly becoming more popular. Let’s take a look at the differences between the two modes so you have a better understanding:
Acro flight is done without the use of a gyro stabilization module. As such, you are able to perform flips and rolls with the drone and perform impressive narrow turns with increased maneuverability. However, be aware that it takes a lot of skill, training, and effort to master acro flying.
Stabilized drones use an integrated gyroscope to keep the drone stable at all times. That means that your drone is only able to roll and pitch to a certain degree to stop it from turning too much and flipping over.
I’m Buying my First Drone, Do I Need One with a Camera?
Whether you need a drone with a camera or not depends on what you want to use the drone for. If you’re looking for something that you can fly around for a few minutes then no, you won’t need one with a camera.
